The Gilded Age on TV

Updated: Jan 28

If you are here, you must be interested in the Gilded Age and the like. The Downton Abby series piqued a lot of interest in this phase of life in the world and the USA at the time.

The Downton Abbey series by Julian Fellowes was done well with great character depth and the "set" in the form of Highclere Castle in England. Julian decided to focus on The Gilded Age in America, as a follow-on to Downton's incredible success with audiences worldwide. It is tough to follow English actors in a period drama...but Fellowes' The Gilded Age on HBO has made a good start. Season 1 had some rough edges but evolved nicely. Season 2 is out now. In both seasons, there are many scenes shot on location at existing/tour-able Newport, RI "cottages" which makes it fun.

If you haven't checked out The Gilded Age on HBO, we do recommend it. Below is a Trailer.

The Gilded Age in Newport is also nicely documented in the book "Gilded, How Newport Became America's Richest Resort" in her conversations with Eileen Slocum - the last grande dame of the Gilded Age.

Here is a video interview with Eileen Slocum.
